HOW TO: Replace a file in the wordpress media library

(Video: 2 mins)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Navigate to Media Library

In the dashboard sidebar, click “Media”.

2. Find Your File

Click the “Search media” field and enter the exact name of the file you want to replace.

3. Select the File

When your file appears in the search results, click on it to open its details page.

4. Access Edit Options

Click “Edit more details” to see additional file options.

5. Start the Replacement Process

In the “Replace Media” section, click “Select New Media File”.

6. Upload Your New File

Click “Select Files” to browse and upload your replacement file.

Important: The new file must be the same file type as the original (PDF to PDF, JPEG to JPEG, etc.). Mixed file types will cause the replacement to fail.

7. Confirm the Replacement

After uploading, click “Perform Replacement” to initiate the replacement process.

8. Finalize Changes

Click “Update” to complete the process.

What Happens Next

The current admin page won’t show changes immediately, but your file will be updated on the live website within 5 mins. The old file is now replaced with your new version while keeping the same URL and location.
